NITI Aayog CEO B V R Subrahmanyam on Saturday informed that India has successfully surpassed Japan to become the world's fourth largest economy. While briefing the press following the 10th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog, Subrahmanyam stated that India is also likely to become the third largest economy in the world in the next two to three years.
"We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a $4 trillion economy as I speak," Subrahmanyam was quoted as saying by PTI. "It is only the US, China, and Germany which are larger than India, and if we stick to what is being planned and what is being thought through, in 2.5-3 years, we will be the third largest economy," he added.
While India has surpassed Japan on the list, it is still behind three larger economies in the world: the United States of America, China, and Germany. Here is the list of the top ten countries with the largest economies with their GDP:
1. United States: With the origin and functioning of several top MNCs in the world from here, the United States of America is the top economy in the world with a total worth of USD 30.34 trillion. The country leads in several sectors, including information technology, defence, and space research.
2. China: The Asian giant has shown significant growth in the past few decades. From being considered a struggling economy to one of the biggest economies in the world, Beijing has come a long way. The current GDP of China is USD 19.53 trillion, second in the world.
3. Germany: Known for its automobile firms and infrastructure, Germany holds the third rank with a total GDP of USD 4.92 trillion.
4. India: While once the Asian country was criticised for its slow growth and stereotypes, India has broken several economic barriers in the last three decades since opening its market in 1991. With a total GDP of USD 4.39 trillion, India currently holds the fourth position.
5. Japan: Japan is ranked fifth on this list with a total GDP of USD 4.27 trillion. Even with a smaller population in comparison to other giants, Japan has shown immense potential in technology and sciences.
6. UK: The United Kingdom is ranked sixth with a total GDP of USD 3.73 trillion.
7. France: France holds the seventh rank with a total GDP of USD 3.28 trillion.
8. Italy: The European country is ranked eighth on this list with a total economy worth USD 2.46 trillion.
