Sensex, Nifty Today: The domestic equity indices crashed by over a per cent in opening trade after a sharp rise in crude prices amid the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and uncertainty around the second round of peace talks between the US and Iran.
At the time of Writing, the BSE Sensex was down 1.26 per cent or 979.25 points to 76,517. Nifty50 quoted at 23,870.85, down 306.80 points or 1.27 per cent.
Meanwhile, Brent Crude surpassed the $120 mark. At the time of writing, the global oil benchmark was trading at $123.8 per barrel, up 5.78 per cent.
"Indian equity markets have opened on a weak note, extending recent losses amid subdued global cues and persistent geopolitical tensions. Early trade reflects a risk-off sentiment, with broad-based selling visible across sectors, indicating a lack of strong buying interest at higher levels," said Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money.
Top Losers and Gainers
Eternal, Indigo, Ultratech Cement, Mahindra and Mahindra, Adani Ports, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Reliance, L&T, ICICI Bank, Asian Paints and Titan were the top losers in early trade from the Sensex basket. Bajaj Finance, Bajaj FinServ, and Sun Pharma were the top gainers.
At the sectoral front, Nifty Auto crashed nearly 2 per cent. Followed by Nifty Bank (1.20 per cent), Nifty Fin Services (0.8 per cent), and Nifty FMCG (0.5 per cent).

The broader market followed suit as well. Nifty Midcap 100 was down over 1 per cent, Nifty Small Cap 100 fell nearly 0.4 per cent, Nifty 100 was down over 1 per cent, and Nifty Next 50 was trading 1.20 per cent lower.
