Suryakumar Yadav could still earn a place back in India’s T20I squad if he performs consistently in domestic cricket, according to a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Suryakumar, who captained India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, was removed as T20I captain and left out of the squad after going through a poor run with the bat before the tours of Ireland and England. The selectors later handed the captaincy to Shreyas Iyer.
Since Iyer took charge, India have struggled in the shortest format. The team lost the two-match T20I series 2-0 against Ireland before suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to England in a five-match series. The first game of the England series was washed out because of rain.
Despite being out of the current setup, Suryakumar has not been completely ruled out. A BCCI source said the selectors are still open to bringing him back if he keeps scoring runs regularly in domestic cricket.
“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” said a BCCI source as quoted by ANI.

India’s disappointing England tour ended with a 56-run loss in the fifth T20I at Southampton, sealing a 4-0 series defeat. Earlier in the series, India lost the fourth match by nine wickets, the third by 125 runs and the second by four wickets.

The poor run had begun earlier this year when India were beaten 2-0 by Ireland in a T20I series. It was India’s first-ever bilateral T20I series defeat against Ireland. England’s victory was also their first bilateral T20I series win over India in a series featuring two or more matches.
India will now shift their focus to the ODI series against England, where senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be seen in action.
