Former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has raised concerns about a possible difference in thinking between head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar. He believes the lack of clarity between the two could be affecting India’s performances and decision-making.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Karthik said Gambhir and Agarkar are “not on the same page” and suggested that their different approaches may have contributed to India’s disappointing back-to-back T20I series defeats in Ireland and England.
India’s recent UK tour turned into a major setback, with the team losing six of their seven matches. The defeats came during a period of transition after India’s T20 World Cup success, raising questions about the team’s planning and selection strategy.
Karthik explained that the selectors may be focused on building a team for the future, while the coaching staff is looking for immediate results.
"A bit of friction between the chief selector, I feel, who has long-term plans, and a current coach who is saying, you know, I want to win every game that I play, and hence the confusion that we can see unfold in front of us," Karthik said.
He also highlighted how uncertainty among players could impact confidence, especially considering India’s huge pool of talent.
"Is it ideal for the players? Definitely not. I mean, if you're from India, imagine the kind of bench strength India has. Everybody's thinking, 'Oh my God, if I have a couple of bad games, anybody could replace me.' It's definitely a situation that India needs to be aware of and try to rectify as soon as possible."
Questions Raised Over India's Selection Decisions
The difference between long-term planning and short-term results has become a talking point after several unexpected selection decisions.
One of the biggest examples has been the handling of Suryakumar Yadav. Just months after captaining India to a historic T20 World Cup victory, Suryakumar was removed from the leadership role and left out of the squad.
Agarkar defended the decision by pointing towards a transition phase, saying India needed to prepare for the next two-year cycle. He also referred to Suryakumar’s age and recent form while explaining the move.
However, the decision to give the T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer surprised many fans and experts, especially since Iyer was not part of India’s T20 World Cup squad.
Confusion Around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi And Sanju Samson
The selection and handling of young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and experienced player Sanju Samson has also attracted criticism.
Agarkar’s selection panel included the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi in the senior squad after his impressive IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals. The teenager earned attention after producing record-breaking performances.
However, during the Ireland series, the team management did not give him a chance and kept him on the bench. Later, when Sanju Samson struggled for runs in England, Sooryavanshi was brought into the playing XI.
The young batter played three matches and scored 14, 13, and 15 runs before being dropped for the final T20I in Southampton, with Samson returning to the team.
The constant changes drew criticism from several former cricketers and experts. Former World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth strongly criticised the handling of Sooryavanshi and accused the team management of damaging the confidence of one of India’s most promising young players.
With India entering a new phase in white-ball cricket, Karthik believes the leadership group needs better communication and a clearer direction to avoid confusion among players.
