T20 World Cup 2026: The Aiden Markram-led South Africa exacted a measure of revenge, pulling off a huge win against hosts India at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the Super Eight fixture of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday. The win margin was a staggering 76 runs as India are now placed at the bottom of the points table of Group 1 with a net run-rate of -3.800.
The defeat, India's first since the semi-final loss to England in the 2022 edition, has left the group wide open and make their next two games against Zimbabwe (February 26) and West Indies (March 1) literally must-win games to qualify for the last four stage.
On the other hand, South Africa are on top with a handsome run-rate of 3.800.
South Africa skipper Aiden Markram said the key was adapting quickly to conditions.
"It was a different type of wicket to what we have had here. Boys assessed that early and then to adapt to their plans. "Happy for the bowlers. Starting the comp was tough, but tonight (they were brilliant)."
He credited the middle-order stand between David Miller (63) and Dewald Brevis (45), which revived South Africa after early setbacks, before Tristan Stubbs provided the late flourish with a 24-ball 44 not out.
"The partnership -- Brevis and Miller -- put up, it kept us in the game.
"Did not feel like the ball was travelling. It was a bit spongy. Trying to hit into space and run hard.
England Top Group 2
In Group 2, England are leading Group 2 after securing a massive win over co-hosts Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Sunday. The pace-spin duo of Jofra Archer and Will Jacks tore through Sri Lanka's top order after Phil Salt's 40-ball 62, setting up a sensational 51-run win for England.
New Zealand and Pakistan are placed on number 2 and 3 spot, while Sri Lanka are at the bottom.
