Shreyas Iyer-led Team India held an indoor net session in Japan as they started their preparations for the Asian Games 2026 matches.

The BCCI shared a video from the training session, with Sanju Samson and several other players putting in the hard yards in the nets. Head coach VVS Laxman was also present as the players went through their preparations. The clip has gone viral on social media; here is the video:

India Begin Asian Games Title Defence

India are entering the Asian Games with confidence after the women’s team successfully defended the cricket gold medal. Harmanpreet Kaur’s side beat Sri Lanka by 147 runs to retain the title.

India had also won gold in the men’s competition at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. The final against Afghanistan was washed out, with India awarded the gold medal because they had entered the final as the higher-ranked team.

That side was captained by Ruturaj Gaikwad and included several players who later went on to become part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad.

Shreyas Iyer Leads Strong India Squad

This time, Shreyas Iyer will captain the men’s team. The Indian T20I captain will be looking to add another major achievement to his record as a leader.

Iyer has already guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and has also led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He has taken Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals as captain as well.

With several established international players in the squad, India have put together a strong cricket contingent for the Asian Games.

The women’s tournament began with India facing Japan in the quarterfinal on September 18, while the men’s competition gets underway on September 24. India’s opening opponent in the men’s tournament will be confirmed after the qualifying competition.
