Delhi Air Pollution: As Delhi’s Air Quality Index dropped to the ‘severe’ category on Saturday, December 13, anti-pollution measures under GRAP-3 have been enforced in Delhi on Saturday. The new norms were necessitated after the city recorded an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 390 in the early hours of the day. 

“The CAQM GRAP Sub-Committee today has taken the call to invoke all actions as envisaged under Stage-III of extant GRAP - ‘Severe’ Air Quality (DELHI AQI ranging between 401-450), with immediate effect, in the entire NCR. This is in addition to the actions under Stages I & II of extant GRAP already in force in NCR,” an official statement said.

What Are The Curbs Under GRAP-3?

  • Under GRAP III, there is a blanket ban on construction and demolition activities in the entire Delhi National Capital Region.  

  • All classes for students up to grade V have to be mandatorily shifted to a ‘hybrid’ model in Delhi and also in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, and Gautam Buddh Nagar districts of the NCR.

  • All the offices have to be operated at a 50 per cent capacity, and the provision of ‘work from home’ has to be given to people working in the offices. 

  • It also includes a ban on plying of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel LMVs (four wheelers) in Delhi and also in Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar of the NCR.

Delhi-NCR Air Pollution: What Is The Station-Wise Air Quality Index?

- There are over 40 air quality monitoring stations across Delhi, which have been installed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) across the national capital. 

- Over 15 monitoring stations across 40 stations recorded ‘severe’ air quality as Jahangir Puri, Anand Vihar, Mundka, among others, choked at above 400 AQI.

- None of the 40 stations recorded only ‘poor’ air quality, which is below 300.
