BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal on Saturday wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the government to rename Delhi as Indraprastha to re-establish its ancient identity and cultural heritage.
In the letter, he stated that Delhi holds a special place among India's ancient cultural centres. He said that Indraprastha represents the eternal spirit of Indian civilisation and symbolises the ideals of righteous governance and social harmony.
The Chandni Chowk MP stated in the letter, "It is not just a metropolis, but a vibrant symbol of Indian civilisation, embodying the spirit of public welfare, morality, and tradition. History is a witness that during the Mahabharata period, the Pandavas established their capital here."
He added, "I humbly request the Government of India to seriously consider this matter and take a decision so that our capital can regain its ancient identity and glory."
Further Renaming Suggestions
He also suggested renaming the Delhi airport and the Old Delhi railway station:
- Old Delhi Railway Station should be renamed Indraprastha Railway Station.
- Indira Gandhi International Airport should be renamed Indraprastha Airport.
- He also proposed that a prominent statue of the Pandavas be installed at key locations in Delhi.
'Reviving India's Cultural Heritage'
Khandelwal said that just as other historical cities like Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Ujjain, and Varanasi are regaining their ancient identity, Delhi also deserves to be honoured in its original form.
He stated that renaming the national capital would be a significant step towards:
- Reviving India's cultural heritage.
- Restoring the city's legacy.
- Affirming respect for its civilisational heritage.
He said that this would not only revive the capital's ancient identity but also give new strength to our cultural consciousness. He stated that by adopting the name Indraprastha, Delhi will once again emerge as a spiritual, cultural, and civilisational symbol of India.
