The Luni is the largest river in India that flows through the Thar Desert. It originates in the Naga Hills of the Aravalli Range near Ajmer in Rajasthan and travels southeast for about 495 km through the large Thar Desert. Unlike most rivers that either fall into the sea or the ocean, the Luni River goes straight into the salt flats of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat without reaching any large water body.
The Luni River is known as the Sagarmati in its initial stage, and after mixing with Sarasvati from Pushkar Lake, it becomes the Luni. The river flows southwest across several districts in Rajasthan, including Ajmer, Nagaur, Jodhpur, Pali, Jalore and Barmer. he water of the Luni River is brackish in nature, with high salt content, due to the arid climate and saline soil found in the desert. That is how the river got its name -Luni, which means saline in the local language.

The highlight of the river is that it is a major source of irrigation for the arid lands it flows through. It is also significant in the cultural and religious aspects of life here. It is also known as ‘Maruganga’ or the Ganga of Rajasthan. The river flow is only noticeable during the rainy season. While most of it dries out at other times of the year due to the extreme desert temperature and sandy landscape.
