Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar Market is named after legendary Sarojini Naidu, a renowned Indian freedom fighter and poetess who is also known as the 'Nightingale of India.' The marketplace was formerly known as Vinay Nagar. It was at that time a residential colony, built in the 1950s by the government for civil servants. The name ‘Vinay’ referred to politeness.

In the 1970s, the locality was named Sarojini Nagar to commemorate the contribution of Sarojini Naidu during India's freedom struggle. The 'Nightingale of India' was also the first lady governor of Uttar Pradesh after independence.
