Chhaava: Vicky Kaushal is set to enthrall the audience with his portrayal of the legendary Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj in the upcoming historical drama Chhaava. The film also stars Rashmika Mandanna and is slated for release on February 14, 2025. Vicky is known for his dedication and for bringing characters to life on screen as imagined. He has done many biopics before like Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur but this one demanded more from him both mentally and physically. During this time, when he needed some space, his better half Katrina Kaif provided him with much-needed support.
Vicky Kaushal revealed that the intense training for Chhaava was more challenging for him than any other role he has played in his career. During a film promotion event in Delhi, which he attended alongside Laxman Utekar, co-star Rashmika Mandanna, and producer Vijan, the actor told reporters, “I have done biopics before, and each comes with its own responsibility. But with this character, there is a deep sense of faith attached, and you cannot take liberties with that. Fortunately, Dinoo sir and Laxman sir had enough time to research. It’s an intense character, and when you see the film, you’ll know it’s not easy to portray a character like that.”
The Bad Newz actor revealed that he doesn’t usually bring his characters home, but the experience of shooting Chhaava was different.
“There were intense scenes, sometimes action scenes. So, once you’re home after 12 hours of shooting, you just fall on the bed. The time for personal life was limited. Katrina, being from the same industry, understands that when intense parts like these are there, some space is needed. So, she was very kind, sweet, and patient. I don’t bring my characters home, but I used to get a bit quiet because my mind was still in that zone, thinking about what I did today and what I will do tomorrow. Otherwise, there wasn’t much difference. Everything was pretty normal," he added.
Talking about the movie, filmmaker Utekar said during the event, “‘Chhaava’ is not just a film, it’s the truth. He (Sambhaji) fought at the age of 22, his first fight. Every kid should know who he was, his sacrifice, and everyone should know about it. The first time I got the idea for this film, I went to Dinoo sir and said I want to make this film. Without even taking a pause, he said, 'Go for it.' No one has highlighted the hidden history about him, but as soon as he heard the idea, he was on board. The very next day, we began prepping for the film.”
Chhaava is based on the real-life story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the movie features cast including Akshaye Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, Vineet Kumar Singh, Diana Penty and Santosh Juvekar. It is produced by Dinesh Vijan of Maddock Films.
