BLACKPINK, the globally adored girl group, has captured the hearts of millions of fans, known as BLINKs, since their debut in 2016. While the group is widely recognized as a quartet consisting of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, there’s a lesser-known story about a fifth member who was initially slated to debut with them but didn't make the final cut. On the occasion of BLACKPINK’s eighth anniversary, let’s delve into the story of Cho Mi-yeon, the secret 5th member who almost became part of the iconic group.
When BLACKPINK was first conceptualized, YG Entertainment, the management company behind the group, planned to debut a girl group with nine members. However, this plan changed, and the final lineup was trimmed down to four members. Among the trainees who were initially considered for BLACKPINK was Cho Mi-yeon.
Miyeon trained alongside Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa at YG Entertainment and was one of the top contenders to debut with BLACKPINK. However, just six months before the group’s official debut, Miyeon was removed from the lineup. The reasons behind this decision remain unclear, but rumours suggest that her departure was linked to a dating incident involving MIX & MATCH contestant Jung Jin-hyung. YG Entertainment is known for its strict dating ban, which may have played a role in her exclusion from BLACKPINK.
Several fans claim that the group's emotional ballad STAY hints at the group's possible 5th member leaving abruptly and the members pleading for her to stay.

BLACKPINK NOW:
After leaving YG, Miyeon didn’t give up on her dream of becoming an idol. She joined Cube Entertainment and eventually debuted as a member of (G)I-DLE in 2018. Despite not debuting with BLACKPINK, Miyeon has maintained a friendly relationship with the group. She even shared in a radio broadcast that she received a congratulatory message from the BLACKPINK members when she made her debut with (G)I-DLE.
Although (G)I-DLE is not as internationally renowned as BLACKPINK, the group has found significant success in the Kpop industry, breaking several records since its debut. Miyeon has not only contributed to (G)I-DLE’s group activities but has also pursued solo projects. She made her solo musical debut and ventured into acting, starring in the web drama Replay: The Moment in January 2021.
Miyeon’s talents also caught the attention of Riot Games, where she was invited to participate in the virtual K-pop girl group K/DA alongside fellow (G)I-DLE member Soyeon. This project further solidified her presence in the Kpop scene and showcased her versatility as an artist.
