Prabhas's latest movie, Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, has taken the box office by storm. The film, which also stars Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, has had a strong opening in India and is expected to make a significant impact globally.
The excitement around Kalki 2898 AD was palpable even before its release. With Rs 55 crore earned through advance bookings in India, the film set a high bar. Notably, Rs 44 crore of this amount came from the Telugu version alone, highlighting the strong fan base Prabhas commands in the Telugu-speaking regions as per a Sacnilk.com report.
The film has seen remarkable occupancy rates, especially in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In Telangana, the occupancy rate is 73% across 2,586 shows, with 1,871 nearly full. Andhra Pradesh follows with a 64% occupancy rate across 3,188 shows, with 2,100 shows almost full. This robust turnout underscores the film's popularity and the anticipation it generated among audiences.
While the Telugu regions have shown overwhelming support, the response in other parts of India has been more moderate. In the Hindi-speaking belt, the film grossed approximately Rs 8.6 crore. Delhi, with 1,322 shows, has an occupancy rate of just 14%, with only 72 shows fully booked. Similarly, Maharashtra has 2,836 shows with an occupancy rate of 14%, and only 143 shows fully booked. Despite these mixed numbers, the overall gross collection in India stands at an impressive Rs 55 crore, with the nett collection around Rs 21.17 crore.
Kalki 2898 AD is also making waves internationally. In North America, the film has earned $3.08 million (approximately Rs 31 crore) in pre-sales. This strong international performance is a testament to the global appeal of Indian cinema and the star power of Prabhas.
The film's global opening is being closely monitored, with industry insiders expecting it to join the ranks of the biggest Indian openers. SS Rajamouli's RRR holds the record with Rs 223 crore on its opening day, followed by Baahubali 2 with Rs 217 crore. Other notable openings include Yash's KGF 2 with Rs 159 crore and Prabhas's Salaar with Rs 158 crore. Vijay's Leo also made an impressive Rs 142.75 crore on its first day. If predictions hold, Kalki 2898 AD could become the third Indian film to cross Rs 200 crore worldwide on its opening day.
