Nayanthara's 'Annapoorani' premiered in theaters on December 1 and became available on Netflix from December 29. However, a few days after its release on the streaming platform, an FIR (First Information Report) was lodged against the film, alleging it had offended religious sentiments. Ramesh Solanki, the founder of the Hindu IT cell, filed the complaint, asserting that the movie was "hurting Hindu religious sentiments."

The individuals named in the complaint include actors Nayanthara and Jai, writer-director Nilesh Krishna, producers Jatin Sethi, R Ravindran, and Punit Goenka, as well as Shariq Patel, Chief Business Officer of Zee Studios, and Monika Shergill, the head of Netflix India.

Directed by debutant filmmaker Nilesh Krishnaa, the film became embroiled in a legal dispute. As a result, Netflix has decided to remove Annapoorani from its OTT platform. Zee Studios, one of the film's producers, communicated with Vishwa Hindu Parishad, assuring them that the movie would be taken down from the platform until necessary edits were made.

What's the controversy?

A few days ago, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Shriraj Nair publicly criticised the film for making derogatory comments about Lord Rama, portraying him as a meat eater. The film was also accused of promoting 'love jihad.' He issued a warning to Zee Studios, the production banner responsible for the movie, insisting on the immediate removal of the film from Netflix. In response to this, Zee Studios issued an apology to VHP and subsequently took down the title from Netflix.

Annapoorani revolves around an ambitious woman from a Brahmin family in the conservative town of Srirangam. Caught between her aspirations and the orthodox ideals ingrained since childhood, the protagonist defies societal norms, refusing to let caste and religious differences hinder her path. Next, Farhan persuades her to consume meat, citing the assertion that Lord Rama has also partaken in it. Towards the climax, Annapoorani, the main character, dons a hijab and engages in prayers before preparing biryani as part of the concluding round in a cooking competition.

The film also features Sathyaraja, Jai, Achyuth Kumar, KS Ravikumar, Karthik Kumar and Renuka in pivotal role.
