Filmmaker Ayan Mukerji has officially stepped away from Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) highly awaited project, Dhoom 4, reportedly due to creative differences. Instead, the director will now shift his focus back to his ambitious fantasy franchise, Brahmastra, particularly its upcoming sequel, Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev, which is expected to start filming in 2026. YRF still intends to move forward with Dhoom 4 under a new director.

According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, Mukerji’s decision came after realising that his creative vision did not align with YRF’s set direction for the film, leading him to part ways on mutual terms. The report further stated that Dhoom 4’s script, penned by Shridhar Raghavan, was largely developed before Mukerji joined the project. This limited his ability to contribute creatively, as his role was mainly to execute a pre-written vision. A source close to the development revealed, “Ayan didn’t want to be part of a project where he couldn’t shape the story. He’s a filmmaker who enjoys building worlds and narratives that go beyond the script.” The source also added that Mukerji’s filmmaking style thrives on blending drama, emotion, and storytelling with grandeur, which made Brahmastra a more fitting pursuit for him.

Meanwhile, before taking the final call, Ayan reportedly held several meetings with Aditya Chopra and Ranbir Kapoor, who was expected to headline Dhoom 4. Both were said to be understanding of his perspective, and the parting was amicable. Mukerji has now resumed work on Brahmastra: Part Two – Dev, continuing his exploration of the mythological Astraverse. Sources indicate that the script for the sequel is nearly complete, with final refinements underway. During a creative retreat in the Himalayas, Ayan is said to be fine-tuning the story to ensure the sequel expands the universe more deeply than the first film.

On the other hand, reports suggest the studio may consider bringing in an in-house filmmaker to lead the project, while also possibly re-evaluating the casting. Earlier rumours hinted at Ranbir Kapoor’s involvement, but the final lineup remains uncertain. The Dhoom franchise, known for its stylish action and larger-than-life villains, has been one of YRF’s biggest successes, and the production house seems determined to keep the legacy alive even without Ayan Mukerji at the helm.
