'Gaurav Khanna Is Jinxed': Anupamaa Producer Rajan Shahi Was Warned Against Him As Anuj Kapadia

Anupamaa has emerged as one of the most popular shows in recent years. One of the major factor in the show was the chemistry between Anupama (Rupali Ganguly) and Anuja Kapadia (Gaurav Khanna). But the show's producer, Rajan Shahi, disclosed that he received a warning not to cast Gaurav Khanna since many people thought he was 'jinxed.' He revealed that after searching the industry for a good face, he was unable to find his Anuj. When he saw Gaurav Khanna's profile one day while driving to New York to drop off his kid, he recalled how the actor had been contacting him over the years. He thought the actor was perfect for the part at that point.

Gaurav Khanna was considered 'jinxed' because of the failure of his prior ventures, recalled the producer in an interview with Screen. However, Rajan Shahi trusted the actor and hired him as Anuj Kapadia without even holding a formal audition. "A lot of people, including some celebrities, told me that Gaurav’s shows didn’t work; he is jinxed. And I hate when someone says that. I have heard these things about me in the beginning, so it makes me furious. Everything has its own synergy and fate; one person cannot be responsible for determining that," he shared.

Anupamaa producer went on to say that he just spoke to Gaurav Khanna for a look test and never formally auditioned him for the part. Following that, he agreed to a three-year deal with him, but he made it clear up front that his length on the program would depend on the character's progress. "There was a lot of confidence in Anuj’s character. By the time Gaurav joined, Rupali had taken Anupamaa to greater heights. But Gaurav had that hunger to prove himself; he hadn’t done a serial for 6-7 years, so he gave the show his best," he said.
