Pankaj Tripathi has begun filming the most-awaited project, Mirzapur: The Film in Mumbai. The actor shared that the return of his iconic character, Kaleen Bhaiyya, is described as the big-screen adaptation of a bold gamble and a moment of poetic symmetry in his career. Sharing a sheer coincidence, Tripathi stated that when he began shooting for the series, it started with the last scene. Now, for this project as well, he has started with the last scene. He also shared his excitement about the series turning into a feature film.

In an interview with Mid Day, Pankaj Tripathi said, “I began filming the series with the last scene of that season. Now, after all these years, my first day was again spent shooting the last scene.”

The actor finds the move of taking the Prime Video series into a theatrical experience as a ‘bold gamble’. He continued, “It’s the first time in India that a series is being transformed into a theatrical feature. It shows the faith the producers have in the story and these characters.”

Over the years, Kaleen Bhaiyya has become a popular villain in the Hindi entertainment industry. The character has several grey shades, including being a gangster. But Pankaj Tripathi does not see Kaleen Bhaiyya as a criminal. He said, “People call him a gangster, but I’ve always seen Kaleen as a businessman. He’s soft-spoken, calm, and calculative. If you didn’t know what his business was, you might even find him poetic.”

Talking about his previous and current life, Pankaj Tripathi said, “For the first 18-19 years of my life, I didn’t even use a toothbrush. We didn’t have that concept in the village because there wasn’t a market nearby.”
“These little things remind me of how far life has brought me. I didn’t grow up cutting cakes on my birthday or celebrating with gifts that culture didn’t exist where I came from,” he added.

Mirzapur: The Film is set to feature returning cast Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi. The additional star cast includes Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan and Mohit Malik. The shooting is currently taking place at Film City, Mumbai. The other segments of the movie are set to be shot in Uttar Pradesh later in the year. It is slated to be released in 2026.
