Filmmaker Hansal Mehta unveiled the third installment of his Scam series, titled "Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga," on May 16. This series, based on Tamal Bandyopadhyay's book 'Sahara: The Untold Story,' will center on the life and journey of the late businessman, Subrata Roy and explore the triumphs and tribulations of the Sahara group. He had established the conglomerate Sahara India Pariwar in 1978. A day after the announcement, Roy's family released a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the show.

The statement issued by the Sahara, it says, "An abusive and grossly condemnable act has been demonstrated by the makers of 'Scam' to achieve cheap and wide publicity, by announcing to unveil, "Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga". Sahara India Pariwar condemns such acts of all the individuals and parties involved and shall resist to their offending behavior. In this regard, the aggrieved members are seeking advice to take suitable legal action against the Producer, Director and all those who are involved in making the illegal portrayal."

"Sahara India Pariwar believes that the dispute between SEBI and Sahara is still pending before Hon'ble Supreme Court and any attempt to influence the proceedings of the said case shall attract contempt of Court, besides such acts amount to criminality. In the garb of a right of free Speech and expression, no one can be allowed to undermine the goodwill and reputation of a person, who is not available to defend himself. The use of the word 'scam' in the title of the so-called web-series and linking it to Sahara seems prima-facie defamatory, and tends to lower down the image and reputation of Saharasri Ji and Sahara India Pariwar. Sahara India Pariwar has never been involved in any chit fund activity. Even the Sahara-SEBI issue was a dispute on the SEBI’s jurisdiction on OFCD bonds issued by Sahara," itadded.

Hansal Mehta reacts

Reaction to Sahara's statement, Hansal Mehta told HT, "I am currently filming in the UK and am unaware of this. A relevant response will be provided by the relevant parties." For the unversed, the filmmaker is presently shooting his next series, "Gandhi," featuring actor Pratik Gandhi.

About Scam 2010

The production of Season 3 of 'Scam' is being handled by Applause Entertainment in partnership with Studio Next, under the direction of Hansal Mehta. Although the release date and cast of the show are yet to be announced, it has been confirmed that the series will premiere on the OTT platform Sony LIV.

'Scam 2010' narrates the remarkable life journey of entrepreneurial figure Subrata Roy, from poverty to prosperity. In the early 2000s, Roy, renowned for his lavish lifestyle, became embroiled in various controversies, such as chit-fund irregularities and involvement with fraudulent investors. These allegations led to his arrest in 2014. However, approximately 25,000 crore rupees remain unclaimed with government authorities, underscoring the enduring repercussions of the Scam that persist to this day. Talking about the same, Hansal Mehta said, "Scam is not just a franchise for me. It is a chronicling of our times. I’m thrilled to collaborate again with Applause and Sony LIV to bring this larger-than-life story alive.”
