Zayed Khan recently opened up about an interesting and emotional experience from when he was cast in the 2004 blockbuster Main Hoon Na. In a conversation on Couple of Things, Zayed shared that Shah Rukh Khan, the lead star of the film, asked him a blunt yet pivotal question before his role was finalized: “Can you act?”
Zayed admitted that, at the time, he felt hurt by the question, as it caught him off guard. Reflecting on the moment, he said, “I was feeling very bad that he asked me that—can you act? I wanted to ask him the same question in return.” Despite his initial discomfort, he responded by confidently stating, “I was born to act,” making it clear that he wasn't trying to be arrogant but was expressing his passion for the craft.
The casting meeting had taken place in Shah Rukh Khan’s office, and Zayed revealed that he wasn’t entirely sure why he was there. Farah Khan, the film's director, had called him for the meeting, and her initial response had left Zayed a bit perplexed. He recounted, “Farah looked at me and told me to shut up for two minutes. I thought she was being rude, and I was trying my best to make conversation. Then Shah Rukh walked in, and, as always, he was sweet and well-mannered.”
Zayed recalled listening to Shah Rukh as he explained the role of the second lead in Main Hoon Na. Despite the tension he felt from being asked if he could act, Zayed eventually landed the role of Shah Rukh’s on-screen brother, cementing his place in what would become one of Bollywood’s iconic films.
Released in 2004, Main Hoon Na marked Farah Khan’s directorial debut and featured an ensemble cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Zayed Khan, and Suniel Shetty. The film went on to become a massive hit, remembered fondly for its unique blend of action, comedy and emotion.
