Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Made In Heaven 2’ has been receiving mixed reviews from critics and audiences. The show is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The filmmaker shared her views on the claims made by author Yashica Dutt over the Dalit character portrayed by Radhika Apte and recently gave a befitting reply to a fan on another agenda.

The filmmaker was recently questioned by a fan on Instagram over the portrayal of Muslim characters in her shows and films. In the 6th episode of ‘Made In Heaven 2’, Dia Mirza essays the role of Shehnaz. In the episode, she tries to kill herself after her husband marries for the second time, which is allowed in Islam.

The filmmaker fact-checked the user and listed several powerful characters from her films and shows over the years. Replying in the comment section of her post, she wrote, “Zaffar Khan and Tanveer in Luck By Chance. Imran and Laila are in ZNMD. Farah Ali in Dil Dhadakne Do. Practically everyone in Gully Boy. Sarfaraz Khan and Leila Shirazi, Kabir, Faiza and Nawab have in Made In Heaven.”

‘Made In Heaven 2’ makers recently released an official statement countering author Yashica Dutt. She claimed that it was her life that inspired the character of Pallavi Menke, essayed by actor Radhika Apte.

The official statement read, “The central conflict of the episode is whether Pallavi should fight to have the wedding rituals that are a signifier of her identity, or not. None of the above is drawn from Yashica Dutt's life or her book - 'Coming Out As Dalit'. We categorically deny any claim that Ms. Dutt's life or work was appropriated by us.”

The statement further read, “Coming out is a 1950's academic LGBTQIA term that was first used by Mr. Sumit Baudh in the Indian caste identity context in 2007. He used this in an article he wrote for Tarshi. A decade later it was used by Ms. Dutt in her book. This term has since become common parlance for reclaiming caste-identity. (sic)”
