Besides Lok Sabha polls, the bugle of the Assembly elections has been sounded in four states of the country. As many as 60 seats of Arunachal Pradesh will go into polls on April 19. The voting for the assembly polls here will take place along with the first phase of the Lok Sabha.

To everyone’s surprise, the BJP has managed to register victory in 10 seats of the state even without the polling exercise. The winners include CM Pema Khandu and deputy CM Chowna Mein.

CM Khandu filed his nomination from the Mukto constituency and won without a contest as no other person filed the nomination. Similarly, BJP candidates have won the remaining nine seats.  

Chief Electoral Officer Pawan Kumar Sen said Khandu and nine others were elected unopposed after the period for withdrawal of nominations ended. He said one nomination paper was filed in six assembly constituencies while candidates in four others withdrew their papers. "Single nomination paper has been filed in six assembly constituencies while in four others, opposition candidates withdrew their papers," he said.

This will be Khandu’s fourth term as an MLA from Mukto, which is situated close to the India-China border. He was elected unopposed from this seat on a Congress ticket after his father Dorjee Khandu was killed in a helicopter accident.

Besides CM and deputy CM, other candidates who got elected unopposed include Jikke Tako from Tali seat, Nyato Rigia from Taliha, Mutchu Mithi from Roing, Dasanglu Pul from Hayuliang, Dongru Siongju from Bomdila, Ratu Techi from Sagalee and Hage Appa from Ziro–Hapoli.

High-stakes Lok Sabha polls will begin on April 19.
