Azam Khan Sentenced: A court on Saturday sentenced Samajwadi Party general secretary Azam Khan to two years in prison for his objectionable remarks against the District Magistrate. So far, verdicts have been given in 16 cases against Khan. He has been convicted in eight cases and acquitted in eight. The case in which the ruling was given on Saturday concerns his threatening remark against the administrative officer during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Khan, who contested the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 2019 in an alliance between the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the BSP, made several controversial statements during the election campaign, prompting authorities to file cases against him in various police stations in the district for violating the model code of conduct. The Election Commission also banned his campaigning.
One of these cases was filed in the Bhot police station after a video of Khan emerged, in which he was standing on his vehicle and speaking through a microphone, while people stood around him listening to him. He said, "Stay strong. Don't be afraid of these collectors and police officers. They are salaried people. We are not afraid of salaried people."
"Have you seen photos of Mayawati? How high-ranking officials take out handkerchiefs to clean her sandals? I have an alliance with her. If God wills, I will get her shoes cleaned by her. At that time, the District Magistrate of Rampur was Anjaneya Kumar Singh, who is currently the Divisional Commissioner," he heard as saying in the video.
The police investigated and filed a charge sheet in court. The case was being heard in the MP-MLA Special Court (Magistrate Trial). Senior Prosecution Officer Rakesh Maurya said the court found Khan guilty and sentenced him to two years' imprisonment.
Khan has already spent more than the two-year sentence he received for making objectionable remarks against the District Magistrate.
Azam Khan Already In Jail In Two PAN Card Cases
Meanwhile, the SP leader is already in jail along with his son Abdullah. On November 17, 2025, the same court sentenced both of them to seven years in prison in two PAN card cases.
On October 18, 2023, the MP-MLA Special Court (Magistrate Trial) sentenced Khan, his wife, former MP Dr Tanzeem Fatima, and son, former MLA Abdullah, to seven years in prison in the two birth certificate case.
Thie sentence was imposed for Abdullah's obtaining two birth certificates with different dates of birth, a case for which was filed by BJP MLA Akash Saxena at the Ganj police station on January 3, 2019. After the sentencing, all three were initially imprisoned in Rampur jail.
Later, on October 22, 2023, Khan was shifted to Sitapur jail and Abdullah to Hardoi jail. Azam Khan was then imprisoned in Sitapur jail for 23 months. He was released from Sitapur jail on September 23, 2025, after being granted bail. However, just 52 days later, Khan and his son Abdullah had to go back to jail when the verdict in two PAN card cases came. They have been in jail since November 17, 2025. This means they have been in jail again for six months.
