Bangladesh Crisis: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has urged the central government to take necessary steps to curb violence against the minorities in Bangladesh amid political unrest. Tharoor suggested the centre to try to persuade Dhaka to take "constructive steps" to maintain law and order. He emphasised that while New Delhi cannot interfere in Bangladesh's internal issues, it can use diplomacy to ensure safety for the minorities. His remarks came days after a Hindu factory worker was killed in Mymensingh by a mob for alleged blasphemy. The Congress leader also suggested the centre to support the forces keen to establish an "inclusive democracy" in the neighbouring nation.
Tharoor emphasised that India can exercise its diplomatic influence in Bangladesh, reminding them of New Delhi's contribution to independence and growth. “India cannot interfere in the domestic affairs of a neighbouring country. But as a country which has contributed in many ways to the Bangladeshi nation and people, we can certainly exercise our diplomatic influence in Dhaka to persuade the (Yunus) government to take constructive steps,” Tharoor was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.
While applauding the Modi government's approach in handling the situation after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ouster, he further urged the government to support the inclusive forces. “The Parliamentary Standing Committee (on External Affairs) studied this in some detail and came up with a report just a few days ago. We commended the government on a constructive approach while urging it to support forces working towards (setting up) an inclusive democracy in Bangladesh,” Tharoor asserted.
Earlier on December 19, the Bangladesh government condemned the lynching of the Hindu man, further assuring strict action against the offenders. "There is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared," the statement said. "We wholeheartedly condemn the lynching of a Hindu man in Mymensingh. There is no space for such violence in the new Bangladesh. The perpetrators of this heinous crime will not be spared", it added.
