Kolkata News: Bengali film actress Payel Mukherjee has alleged that she was attacked by a bike-borne miscreant in the posh Southern Avenue area of Kolkata on Friday evening. In a video posted on the social media platform X, Mukherjee recounted the incident, explaining how the unidentified assailant approached her car and demanded that she roll down the window. When she refused, the man became enraged and shattered the car’s glass, with shards visible in the footage.
Shaken by the attack, Mukherjee has demanded strict action against the perpetrator, highligting growing concerns over women’s safety in West Bengal.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many netizens expressing anger over the lack of adequate security measures for women, despite the state’s Chief Minister being a woman. One user sarcastically questioned the government’s priorities, writing, “Safety is not at all their priority.” Second one wrote, "Now Kolkata is the worst city. " Another one wrote, "What a shame that even artist are facing attacks." Fourth one wrote, "Fear has vanished from the minds of criminals"
The incident has ignited a wave of criticism on social media. The BJP has targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in their response on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating: "Bengali actress Payel Mukherjee is attacked by a bike-borne assailant in Kolkata’s Southern Avenue while live on social media. This highlights the alarming state of safety in Kolkata under Mamata Banerjee's administration. Her adviser’s recommendation for women to avoid night shifts adds to the issue."

Earlier, actress Mimi Chakraborty and Trinamool Congress leader Rajanya Halder, who is also an actress, have also claimed receiving rape threats on social media.

This latest assault on Payel Mukherjee follows the recent rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College, which sent shockwaves across the nation. Protests have continued as people demand justice for the victim.
In a related development, the Supreme Court has intervened, ordering the protesting medics to return to work while assuring them that they will face no repercussions.
