Bengaluru Viral News: In another payment-related row from Bengaluru, a resident landed in controversy after refusing to pay an autorickshaw driver in cash. The man shared his experience on X (formerly Twitter), where he admitted to walking away without paying the fare as the driver declined to accept payment via UPI.
According to his post, the incident took place on Monday morning. The commuter had booked the auto using an app-based cab service. After completing the ride, he attempted to make the payment through UPI. However, the driver insisted on receiving cash instead. The man refused, saying, “I’m not going to pay cash.”
The auto driver had already marked the trip as ‘paid’ on the app, assuming the digital transaction would follow. The situation escalated when the driver threatened the commuter mildly and called someone for advice. The driver then handed over the phone to the passenger, asking him to speak. The man declined, stating, “I won’t talk to any random person.”
As the argument continued without resolution, the passenger warned the driver that he would leave without paying. The driver, assuming he was bluffing, reportedly told him to do so “if he had the guts.” The man then claimed he walked away, ending the ride unpaid.

His post received sharp criticism from social media users, most of whom sided with the autorickshaw driver. Many pointed out that while UPI is a convenient option, it is not mandatory for service providers to accept it.
One user commented, “You are legally required to pay for the service. The driver is not legally required to accept UPI. You’re not a hero here.” Another wrote, “You can’t deny paying by cash if he doesn’t accept UPI. UPI is a convenient way to pay. But it is not equivalent to legal tender when it comes to refusing UPI payment. Refusing to pay is plain rude and bad."
