Bengaluru Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Bengaluru and across other Karnataka districts for the next five days. The weather body has warned people of moderate to heavy thundershowers, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h. 130 mm of rain lashed Bengaluru in around 12 hours from Sunday evening till dawn on Monday. The heavy rain left three dead and multiple homes flooded. Underpasses and flyovers were closed to traffic leading to disruption in vehicular movement. As per IMD data, Bengaluru saw 105.5 mm of rainfall during the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on May 19, Monday.

“Conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest Monsoon over some more parts of south Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Maldives & Comorin area; some more parts of South Bay of Bengal; some more parts of central Bay of Bengal, and some more parts of northeast Bay of Bengal during next 2-3 days,” IMD, Bengaluru said in its bulletin.

“An upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over eastcentral Arabian Sea off the Karnataka coast around 21st May. Under its influence, a Low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around 22nd May. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwards and intensify further,” IMD, Bengaluru added.

A 32-year-old woman, Shashikala D, working as a sweeper in a private company in Whitefield, died after the wall of the building collapsed. A 12-year-old boy and a 63-year-old man were electrocuted when they tried to pump out water in their house in South Bengaluru.

"Deeply concerned by rain havoc and I've been in constant touch with officers. The issues we face today have been ignored for years, across govts and administrations. The only difference now is we are working to solve them. Not with temporary fixes but with long-term, sustainable solutions," said Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.
