India's packaged sweet industry is a massive business, valued at over Rs 7,268 crore. This market sees a significant surge in demand and sales during festive seasons like Dhanteras-Diwali and on occasions like the New Year.
With Diwali just around the corner, sweet sales are set to soar. But have you ever wondered who the oldest and most iconic sweet makers in India are? Let's take a look.
1. Bhagat Halwai, Agra (Founded: 1795)
Established by Lekh Raj Bhagat, this shop has been serving sweets for over 230 years. They offer sweet packs ranging from Rs 352 to Rs 800 and also sell a variety of snack products.
2. Punjabi Ghasitaram Halwai, Mumbai (Founded: 1916)
The founder, Ghasitaramdas Bajaj, originally started the company in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1916. After the partition in 1947, his son, Gordhandas Bajaj, re-established the business in Mumbai. They are famous for their Besan Ladoo, Peda, and Kaju Katli.
3. Parsi Dairy Farm, Mumbai (Founded: 1916)
Also in Mumbai, this 109-year-old establishment offers more than 80 varieties of sweets. Parsi Dairy Farm is known for its fresh milk, traditional sweets, and classic dairy delicacies.
4. Kanwarji Bhagirath Mal, Delhi (Founded: 1850)
Located in Chandni Chowk's famous Parathewali Gali, this sweet shop was founded in 1850. Their Pista Lauj is extremely famous.
5. KC Das, Kolkata (Founded: 1866)
The founder, KC Das, is credited with launching the first canned Rasgulla in 1930. The legacy of this Kolkata-based sweet maker began in 1866.
6. Punjabi Chandu Halwai, Mumbai (Founded: 1896)
Chandulal Bahl moved from Karachi to Mumbai and established Punjabi Chandu Halwai in 1896. Their Sindhi Jalebi is very popular.

7. Chaina Ram Sindhi Confectioners, Delhi (Founded: 1947 in Delhi)
Situated in Chandni Chowk, this shop was originally located in Lahore's Anarkali Market before the partition. It was re-established in Delhi in 1947.
8. Basha Halwawala, Chennai (85 Years Old)
This 85-year-old shop in Chennai is famous for its unique halwas. Their "Dum Ka Roat," a halwa made with honey, is incredibly popular. They offer various other halwas with prices ranging from Rs 480 to Rs 700 per kg.
