Chennai News: The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is planning for a seamless travel experience for flyers in the region. Once the greenfield airport at Parandur becomes operational, passengers will be able to travel between the existing airport at Meenambakkam and the new facility in less than an hour via a metro train.

According to a Times Of India report, a feasibility study is currently underway for a metro line that will connect the Meenambakkam airport to Poonamallee, covering a distance of approximately 16 kilometres and passing through areas like Kundrathur and Thiruneermalai. This line is seen as a crucial link, as it will eventually connect to the planned 43.63-kilometre extension from Poonamallee to the Parandur airport.

"The detailed project report (DPR) for the Poonamallee-Parandur extension line is being prepared and the same consultant will also deliver a detailed feasibility report before the end of 2024," explained a CMRL official. This comprehensive planning will ensure that the two airports are seamlessly linked, allowing passengers to switch between the metro lines at the Poonamallee interchange station.

The proposed Poonamallee-Parandur line, which will have around 19 elevated metro stations, is envisioned as an extension of the 26.1-kilometre Corridor-4 of Phase-2, running from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass. This strategic alignment takes into account the future growth potential along the corridor, including the planned bus terminus at Thirumazhisai and the Parandur airport itself.

"The DPR process involves extensive soil investigation, topographical surveys using drones and an alignment study to finalise the station locations and land requirements," the CMRL official added. This meticulous planning is crucial to ensure the successful integration of the two airport facilities within the city's expanding metro network.

The 1.74-crore contract for the DPR preparation was recently awarded, underscoring the importance of this project in enhancing Chennai's overall connectivity and transportation infrastructure.
