Delhi has witnessed a worrying rise in accidents over the past month, with several incidents of fires and building collapses during May and June claiming multiple lives. These repeated tragedies have raised serious concerns over fire safety compliance, building regulations, and unchecked illegal construction across the city. The recent incident in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, where a massive fire at a hotel-restaurant complex killed 21 people, has further highlighted these lapses. Preliminary reports suggest that the building’s height was illegally extended.

A Look At Recent Incidents

In early May, a fire caused by an AC blast in a four-story building in Vivek Vihar killed nine people, including a child. A massive fire in Sadh Nagar, Palam, also claimed the lives of nine members of a family. On May 30, the collapse of a five-story commercial building in Saidulajab, Saket, killed six people (doctors and engineers), and injured several others.

This incident exposed illegal construction and MCD negligence. On June 2, 10 people were injured when a house collapsed due to an LPG cylinder explosion in Mukundpur. On June 3, a fire at a restaurant in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives. In all these incidents, negligence on the part of the administration is evident.

Major Fire Incidents In Delhi

-Malviya Nagar hotel-restaurant fire (June 3): A massive fire at a hotel-restaurant complex in Malviya Nagar, South Delhi, killed 21 people, while 47 were rescued. Many jumped from windows to save their lives.

-Vivek Vihar fire (May 3): Nine people, including a child, died in a fire at a four-story residential building in Vivek Vihar, East Delhi. Preliminary investigations indicated an AC explosion as the cause of the fire.

-Bawana factory fire (May 30): A fire broke out at a cooler-grass manufacturing unit in the Bawana Industrial Area. The fire department rescued nine people safely.

-Vivek Vihar fire (May 3, 2026): Nine people died in a massive fire that broke out in a four-story residential building in Vivek Vihar, East Delhi. Eyewitness accounts and initial reports suggested an air conditioner blast or a short circuit related to the air conditioner as the likely cause of the fire, although the final investigation report is awaited.

-Hauz Khas Enclave fire after AC blast (May 2026): A fire broke out in a house in Hauz Khas Enclave, South Delhi, after an AC exploded. Former IAS officer and former World Bank consultant Dhanendra Kumar died in the accident.

Major Building Collapse Incidents

-Saidulajab-Saket building collapse (May 30): A multi-story commercial building collapsed in Saidulajab, near the Saket Metro station. Six people were killed and several others were injured. Among the deceased were students preparing for competitive exams.

-Jwala Nagar building accident: Several people were injured when the upper portion of a building collapsed in Jwala Nagar, Shahdara.

-Mukundpur cylinder explosion (June 3): A house collapsed after an LPG cylinder exploded in Mukundpur, northwest Delhi. 11 people were injured, several of them seriously burned.

Delhi Sees Massive Increase In Fire Incidents

According to data from the Delhi Fire Service, fire incidents increased by 73 per cent in April 2026 compared to March. Between January and April, 6,693 fire incidents were recorded.
