Delhi Air Pollution: Amid the deplorable air pollution in Delhi-NCR, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has constituted an expert committee under the Chairmanship of IIT Madras Professor Ashok Jhunjhunwala. Vehicular emissions remain a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi-NCR, aggravating PM 2.5, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions. This poses serious public-health challenges in the region.

"The Expert Committee brings together leading academicians, health specialists, automotive research institutions and other experts in the field to recommend a robust, multi-pronged roadmap for emission reduction in the vehicular sector," the committee said, quoted by ANI.

The committee would also examine technology readiness, infrastructure demands, cost considerations, and possible incentives to accelerate the shift to Electric Vehicles (EVs) across different categories. Furthermore, it would propose any additional measures needed to curb air pollution from vehicular transport.

Delhi Air Pollution: Committee To Give Recommendations Within 2 Months

The Expert Committee is expected to present its recommendations within two months. It may engage with stakeholders during the process and provide interim suggestions if required. The Expert Committee can also co-opt additional experts or institutions as deemed necessary. The first meeting of the Committee will take place on December 15.

The constitution of this Expert Committee will advance evidence-based policy action for improving air quality and safeguarding public health in Delhi-NCR.
