In a major update for Delhiites, construction of the Barapullah Phase-3 Flyover project, which has been progressing at a snail's pace for the past nine years, has now reached its final stages, jagran.com reported.

The Public Works Department has set a target to complete this corridor by June 30. With the commencement of this project, the journey of millions of motorists commuting from Yamunapar (East Delhi) to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and South Delhi will become much easier.

Elevated Bridge To Come Up

Under this project, a three and a half kilometre long elevated bridge is being built over the Yamuna River from Mayur Vihar Phase-1 to Sarai Kale Khan.

Currently, vehicles coming from across the Yamuna River have to travel to AIIMS via the Ring Road, which increases the distance. Once this corridor opens, the journey from Mayur Vihar to AIIMS can be covered in just 15 to 20 minutes.

Why Was The Project Stalled?

The foundation stone for the project was laid in 2014, and its completion deadline was 2017. However, due to gross negligence of previous administrative officials and land acquisition disputes, the project remained in limbo.

Work on a large portion of the project stalled for several years due to farmers' land in the Yamuna Khadar area. After a lengthy legal and administrative standoff, the land dispute was finally resolved, and construction resumed at a rapid pace.

Huge Increase In Costs

This nine-year delay has directly impacted the project's budget. The delay has led to rising construction material prices, pushing the total project cost up to several hundred crores. Despite this additional burden on the government treasury, the department is in no mood to delay it any further.

Final Stage Work Underway

According to the PWD, most of the civil work on the bridge has been completed. Now, only finishing, lighting, and the installation of safety barriers remain, which are being completed. Top department officials are personally reviewing the progress of the work every week to ensure the June 30 deadline is met.

The opening of this corridor will not only save time and fuel, but will also significantly strengthen connectivity between two major parts of Delhi. The Anti-Corruption Branch is also investigating the project to determine the reasons for the delay and to take action against those responsible.

Delhi Dy CM Parvesh Verma Inspects Elevated Corridor

Delhi Dy CM and Public Works Minister Parvesh Verma inspected the Barapullah Phase-3 elevated corridor. He expressed hope that construction would be completed by June 30. However, a significant portion of the project remains, which may delay its completion.

During this, he informed about this project, stating that once it is operational, commuting from Yamunapar to AIIMS will become much easier. He also directed that colourful lighting be installed along the corridor to enhance the experience for those passing through.
