Delhi Free Bus Travel Card: The officials on Thursday stated that the Delhi government's free bus ride scheme for women will only be available to the women living in Delhi. They further stated that the transport department is soon likely to introduce a 'lifetime' smart card for availing the benefits. They further stated that the government will soon launch the registration process for the women willing to obtain the smart card.
The statement from the government emerged days after Chief Minister Rekha Gupta alleged corruption in the existing 'pink ticket' system under the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. While speaking in the assembly, CM Gupta stated that the government will soon launch digital travel cards for women.
We Want To Eliminate Corruption- CM Rekha Gupta
"We are committed to providing this service to women... Corruption will not be tolerated. We will introduce digital travel cards for women, putting an end to the 'pink corruption' tied to physical tickets," CM Gupta was quoted as saying by PTI. "The card will allow women to travel freely on public buses anytime, eliminating corruption linked to ticketing," she added.
She emphasised that the digital travel cards will enhance efficiency and will reduce corruption in the scheme. She further stated that the system will be modernised and changes will be implemented to ensure transparency and efficiency.
"Our goal is to make Delhi's public transport more accessible, reliable, and globally recognised," CM Gupta said during the Budget Session. The pink ticket scheme was launched by the AAP government on the occasion of Bhai Dooj in 2019, intending to offer free travel to women on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses.
The government had stated that the women will receive single-journey passes in the form of pink tickets. The government used to compensate the bus companies depending on the total number of tickets issued by the staff.
