Delhi Metro Security Update: One month after the terror attack near Lal Qila Metro station, Delhi Metro has launched a major security upgrade to protect its 60–65 lakh daily passengers.
AI-powered X-ray baggage scanners are being installed at every entry gate to instantly detect explosives, weapons or any banned items. So far, 76 old machines have been replaced with these new smart scanners at key stations, including Barakhamba Road, Chandni Chowk, Central Secretariat, Chawri Bazar, Hauz Khas and Vishwavidyalaya. All stations on the upcoming Phase-4 lines will get these advanced machines from day one.
Old CCTV cameras Are Being Swapped
- Around 11,000 cameras inside more than 350 trains (including women’s coaches) and 13,000 cameras across platforms, escalators and ticket counters are being upgraded to high-resolution IP cameras with video analytics, jagran.com reported.

- Even the 70 oldest Phase-1 trains that originally had no cameras are now getting them during mid-life refurbishment.
How New AI baggage Scanners Work
- High-resolution cameras on both entry and exit sides
- Every scan is recorded as a video clip for later review
- Instantly flags stolen or misplaced bags
- Automatically circles and highlights knives, guns, explosives or suspicious objects on the screen
A senior DMRC official said, “Our aim is to make Delhi Metro not just the safest public transport system in India, but one of the safest in the world. These technologies detect threats instantly and give passengers complete confidence.”
With daily ridership crossing pre-COVID levels, the upgraded security net is being seen as a direct response to the Red Fort incident and a long-term shield against future threats.
