The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to transform outdoor play for children by developing twelve theme-based parks across the national capital. Of the twelve, three parks are already under construction in neighbourhoods, such as Mayapuri, Saket, and Greater Kailash-2.
Each park, costing between Rs 1 to 3 crore, will feature unique themes such as Jungle Book, marine life, insects, and octopuses. This initiative aims to create engaging and creative outdoor spaces for children to play and enjoy.
“Each of these parks will cost around Rs 1-3 crore. Work is in the advanced stage in the park being developed in Rohini's Teacher's park, while installation has been started in Kalkaji park near Nehru Place flyover, where an insect theme park is being set up, which will be ready in the next month,” Hindustan Times quoted a senior MCD official as saying.
Details About MCD’s Themed Park Initiative
- In a major move, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) plans to create themed parks inspired by the popular Dino Park in each administrative zone across the national capital.
- According to the finalised plan, M-Block Market in Greater Kailash 2 will feature a Garuda-themed park, inspired by the mythical bird from Hindu and Buddhist traditions.
- Other notable examples include Mayapuri’s Jungle Book-inspired park, Saket’s vibrant butterfly park, Swasthya Vihar’s marine life-themed space, Mayur Vihar’s peacock-inspired theme park, and Ajmal Khan Park in Karol Bagh octopus-theme park.
- “In some cases, we have also subdivided the projects by adding simpler play equipment in a second park. For instance, Saket and Nehru Place parks have been clubbed,” the official added.
Despite managing more than 15,000 parks in the national capital, the MCD currently offers very few playgrounds designed specifically for children. Persistent appeals from the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Delhi High Court have pushed for more child-centric areas to encourage outdoor play.
A bench of judges comprising former Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan emphasised the importance of creating dedicated play spaces for children.
