Railway News: After hundreds of IndiGo flights were suddenly cancelled, people trying to reach Delhi and Mumbai are now rushing to trains, but almost every train is already full because of the wedding season rush.
Special ‘clone’ trains that Railways ran as extra help filled up within minutes:
- Sunday’s clone train 05591 to Anand Vihar has 29 waiting
- Monday’s clone train 05587 to LTT has 120 waiting in 3AC, 125 in Sleeper and 51 in 2AC
- Regular trains like Gorakhdham Express still show 250 waiting in 3AC even days ahead
- Kushinagar Express (8 Dec) has 250 waiting in 3AC; other classes are ‘No Room’
Railway officials, quoted as saying by Jagran.com, informed that the special clone train leaving Monday evening (05591) to Anand Vihar still has many empty seats in 3AC (20 coaches added). It leaves Gorakhpur at 6:00 pm and reaches Anand Vihar the next morning at 7:30 am via Gonda, Sitapur, Bareilly and Ghaziabad. Passengers can still get confirmed tickets on this train.
Chaos in general coaches
People who could not get reserved tickets are buying general tickets. Long queues formed at counters on Saturday. Even after getting a ticket, passengers had to push hard to board.
In general coaches, there was no place to keep a foot – many stood near doors and in galleries all the way to Delhi.
Trains from Bihar routes reaching Gorakhpur (Vaishali, Bihar Sampark Kranti, etc.) are also packed, so no extra seats are available.
Because of heavy fog and extra rush, many trains are running 1–3 hours late. Gorakhdham reached Gorakhpur over 3 hours late on Saturday.
With tickets impossible to get and private buses charging double fare, thousands of travellers from eastern UP, Bihar and Nepal are facing huge problems at Gorakhpur junction. Railways say more special trains will be added if the crowd keeps growing.
