Jharkhand Weather Update: The weather in Jharkhand is expected to remain unstable over the next two days. According to the Meteorological Department, thunderstorms with gusty winds (50–60 km/h) and lightning are likely in most parts of the state today, except the northwestern districts. An Orange Alert has been issued for 18 May. For tomorrow, 19 May, the northwestern districts may see moderate thunderstorms with wind speeds of 40–50 km/h, prompting a Yellow Alert. Light to moderate rain is also expected, offering some relief from the ongoing heatwave.
On Saturday evening, Ranchi and surrounding regions witnessed a sudden dust storm accompanied by strong winds. The gusts were powerful enough to snap tree branches and bring down signboards in several places, blocking roads and affecting daily life.
IMD Issues Orange & Yellow Alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, has issued an Orange Alert for 18 May in most parts of Jharkhand, excluding the northwestern districts of Palamu, Garhwa, Chatra, Koderma, Latehar, and Lohardaga. These areas may witness thunderstorms with wind speeds between 50–60 km/h, along with lightning.
For 19 May, a Yellow Alert has been issued for the northwestern regions, where thunderstorm activity with winds of 40–50 km/h is expected. Similar conditions are forecast for 20 May, prompting the IMD to continue the yellow alert.
Temperature Drop Expected, No Major Change in Next 24 Hours
Weather scientist Abhishek Anand stated that no significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over the next 24 hours. However, between 18–20 May, a dip of 3–4 degrees C is likely, which could bring relief from the prevailing heat.
In the last 24 hours, some parts of the state experienced thunderstorms, lightning, and light to moderate rain. Rajmahal in Sahibganj district recorded the highest rainfall at 20.2 mm. Daltonganj registered the highest maximum temperature at 42.6 degrees C, while the lowest minimum temperature was 24 degrees C in Jagannathpur.
In Ranchi, the day’s maximum temperature was recorded at 39.2 degrees C, and the minimum at 25.6 degrees C. With more rain and thunderstorms in the forecast, residents can expect temporary relief from the heat in the coming days.
