Karnataka Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms across multiple districts of Karnataka till May 22. IMD has put 11 Karnataka districts on orange alert till 22. The districts include - Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for Bengaluru Rural, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru and Ramanagara districts till May 20. Chitradurga district has been placed under a red alert for May 19 for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall are expected across many parts of the coastal, north interior and south interior regions of Karnataka. According to IMD, partly cloudy skies with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers are likely in Bengaluru till May 22.
“The upper air cyclonic circulation over west central Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Coastal Andhra Pradesh at 1.5 km above mean sea level has merged with above trough,” stated IMD, Bengaluru in its bulletin.
“An upper air cyclonic circulation is likely to form over east central Arabian Sea off Karnataka coast around 21st May. Under its influence, a Low-pressure area is likely to form over the same region around 22nd May. Thereafter, it is likely to move northwards and intensify further,” IMD, Bengaluru added.

Coastal Karnataka
May 19: Heavy rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at a few places and moderate rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Udupi, Uttara Kannda and Dakshina Kannada districts.
May 20: Extremely Heavy rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at a few places and heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers are likely to occur at most places over Udupi, Uttara Kannda and Dakshina Kannada districts.
May 21: Heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at a few places and moderate rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) likely to occur at most places over Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts.
May 22: Heavy to very heavy rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at a few places and moderate rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur at most places over Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Dakshina Kannada districts.
North Interior Karnataka
May 19: Heavy to very heavy rain /thundershowers with gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at one or two places and light moderate rain /thundershowers with gusty winds (40-50 kmph) likely to occur at most places over Belagavi, Dharwad and Gadag districts.
