Karnataka Weather Update:  Heavy downpour lashed several parts of Karnataka on Thursday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada and surrounding areas, as well as a yellow alert for Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Kalaburagi and Bidar districts.

The Bidar Deputy Commissioner on Thursday declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the affected areas due to heavy rain across the state. As a precautionary measure, the authorities are on alert, and residents have been advised to avoid low-lying areas.

Karnataka Weather Forecast: Orange And Yellow Alert In THESE Districts

The weather department has issued an orange alert for Dakshina Kannada, forecasting heavy rainfall over the next couple of days. Following an alert for heavy rainfall, the district administration declared a holiday on Thursday, August 28, for all anganwadi centres, primary and high schools, government-aided and private institutions, and pre-university colleges in Mangaluru, Puttur, Mulki, Moodbidri, Ullal and Bantwal taluks.

IMD has issued a yellow alert for light to moderate rain in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Kalaburagi and Bidar districts. “An orange alert denotes 'very heavy' rainfall of 11 to 20 cm, while a yellow alert signals 'heavy rain' between 6 and 11 cm,” news agency PTI reported.

Bengaluru Weather Forecast: Light To Moderate Rain With Thunderstorms

The Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru, has forecasted light to moderate rainfall or thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds blowing at a speed of 30 to 40 kmph. According to the latest forecast, light to moderate rain is likely at isolated places over the next three hours.

Rainfall data recorded between 8.30 AM on August 27 and 5.30 AM on August 28 showed 106.6 mm at Mangaluru AP, 70.1 mm at Gadag, 28.2 mm at Bengaluru HAL AP, 14.8 mm at Chitradurga, 10.4 mm at Kalaburagi, and 4.9 mm at Bengaluru city.

IMD Predicts Power Disruptions, Traffic Snarls Across Karnataka

In Bidar district, incessant rainfall in Aurad taluk caused water to overflow on several bridges, including Dadagi bridge in Badalgaon-Chondimukhed in Bhalki taluk, prompting authorities to impose a complete closure on traffic. Following this, the India Meteorological Department has warned residents of power disruptions, traffic snarls and uprooting of weak tree branches.

The weather department has advised residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel or outing, drive with caution, unplug electrical appliances and seek shelter away from trees and waterbodies.
