A horrific fire broke out on Sunday morning around 6:30 am at the parking area of Thrissur railway station in Kerala, near the entrance of Platform 2, destroying approximately 500 two-wheelers. Three fire tenders rushed to the scene, and the blaze was brought under control by 7:45 am. Authorities received the distress call at 6:45 am.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a spark from an electric line, which fell onto a two-wheeler covered with a protective sheet, may have triggered the fire. Fire officials stated that all precautionary measures were taken to prevent the flames from spreading to the railway platforms. However, the tin-sheeted parking shed itself suffered extensive damage. Police and railway authorities have launched a probe to determine the exact cause.
Eyewitness
The fire was first noticed by Mallika, a staff member managing the parking area, who immediately raised the alarm. “The fire started when a spark from an electric cable fell onto a bike covered with a polythene sheet. The bike caught fire immediately, and the fuel tank burst with a loud sound. I got frightened and called for help,” she said.

According to fire officials, swift action prevented the fire from spreading to the railway platforms, though the parking shed was heavily damaged. Revenue Minister K. Rajan visited the site and requested an official report. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the destruction was extensive, with over 500 two-wheelers likely lost. Train services remained unaffected, while investigators continued to probe the cause of the fire.
Police Investigation And Statewide Safety Inspections
Thrissur City Police Commissioner is heading a special team tasked with investigating the incident. State Police Chief R. Chandrashekhar inspected the site and stated that more details will be revealed once the inquiry concludes. Firefighters have managed to contain the blaze, but the cause of the fire remains unclear.

"Instructions have been issued to inspect all paid parking areas across the state for safety, starting today. Police will take all necessary measures to enhance security, with the Railways, RPF, and local police coordinating closely. Witnesses reported that the fire may have originated from the railway line, which will be thoroughly examined. Inspections will cover all busy paid parking zones, not just those at railway stations," he stated.
