The Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge) will be closed for about 16 hours on Sunday for maintenance work. Traffic along the bridge will be closed from 5 AM to 9 PM. The maintenance, undertaken by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners Authority, includes the replacement of stays and down cables, and bearings.

The Commissioner of Police, IPS Manoj Kumar Verma, announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter). To ease the passenger congestion, the Kolkata Police has also announced alternative routes that will be in place when repair works are going on.

Meanwhile, the Howrah Police Commission has issued alternative routes for freight and non-freight movements on Sunday, November 9:

  • All non-goods vehicles will have to use the Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu), Nivedita Setu, or the Old Bally Bridge (Vivekananda Setu) to move towards Kolkata.

  • Goods vehicles coming from Kolaghat (NH16) will have to take the Dhulagarh-Nibra-Salap-Pakuria-CCR Bridge-Nivedita Setu to enter Kolkata.

  • Goods vehicles coming from Dankuni will have to use the Nivedita Setu to enter Kolkata.

  • Vehicles coming from Kolkata towards Howrah will have to use the Howrah Bridge or the Nivedita Setu.

  • Non-goods vehicles coming towards Kolaghat will have to follow the following route: Kazipara-GT Road-Bataitala-Andul Road-Alampur-NH16-Dhulagarh-Ranihati.

  • Non-goods vehicles coming towards Dankuni have to take the following route: Hang Sang Crossing-Kona Expressway-NH16-Pakuria-CCR Bridge-Maitypara/Dankuni.

  • Additionally, vehicles may also be diverted from Mandirtala, Betaitala Crossing, and Sarasibala School Crossing.

Kolkata Traffic Advisory: Alternate Routes

- All vehicles coming from AJC Bose Road from Zeerut Island side will be diverted from Turf View via grade road towards Hastings Crossing to avail St. George's Gate Road- Strand Road- Howrah Bridge. Alternatively, vehicles can take the right turn from Hastings Crossing for KP Road. 

- Vehicular movement coming along KP Road from the J&N Island side for Vidyasagar Setu will be diverted from 11 Furlong Gate towards Hastings Crossing via St George's Road-Strand Road-Howrah Bridge.

- Traffic flow from CGR Road from the Khidderpore side will be diverted from Hastings Crossing to take a left turn to avail St George's Gate Road - Strand Road - Howrah Bridge.

- Additionally, traffic flow from KP Road, through the Vidyasagar Setu via ramp at Y-Point near Ghora Pass, will be diverted towards the 11 Furlong Gate via KP Road-Red Road for Howrah Bridge. 

- Vehicular traffic will also be diverted through arterial roads as and when required.
