Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Amid ongoing row over Congress leader Supriya Shrinate’s controversial remarks against Bollywood actor and Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mandi candidate Kangana Ranaut, the grand old party has dropped Shrinate as a candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj.

In its eighth list of Lok Sabha candidates, the Congress fielded Virendra Chaudhary from the Maharajganj constituency, replacing Shrinate. Earlier in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shrinate contested the Lok Sabha polls from Maharajganj constituency but lost the battle to BJP’s Pankaj Chaudhary.

This comes after Shrinate’s official Instagram account posted an offensive post featuring a picture of Ranaut and a derogatory caption. However, the Congress leader clarified that other people had access to her social media accounts, one of them published the post, which later created uproar over the social media platforms.

"As soon as I came to know, I deleted that post. Everyone who knows me, also knows very well that I can never make personal and indecent comments towards any woman. I wanted to know how this happened," Shrinate said.

In response to Shrinate’s post, Kangana Ranaut said that she was hurt by the now-deleted post and the use of her city ‘Mandi’ in an inappropriate way. "Every woman deserves dignity, no matter what profession she is in...The most I am hurt by is the 'Mandi' thing, which is known as Chota Kashi and has been the land of several Rishis,” the actor-turned-politician said in a now-deleted social media post.

The Election Commission has also issued a show-cause notice to Shrinate over her social media post. The notice came after the National Commission for Women (NCW) asked the poll panel to take strict action against the Congress leader.
