Madhya Pradesh: Narmada Pipeline Burst Disrupts Indore Water Supply, Floods Mhow Streets

In a major disruption, a Narmada phase 3 pipeline, connecting Jalud to Indore, burst in Madhya Pradesh's Mhow. The high-pressure rupture created several waterlogging across several localities. The disruption submerged roads and left nearby areas waterlogged for several hours.

The pipeline system supplied water to nearly 80 water tanks in Indore. The incident occurred at around 7 am on Thursday morning. The Narmada Water Supply Control Room in Bijalpur received information about the leak and sent teams from the PHE department and Ramki Company to the scene.

To control the situation, the square valves at Gate No. 4 and Kishanganj were first opened to relieve pressure in the pipeline. Following this, the process of dewatering the pit where the leakage occurred was initiated. Four motor pumps were installed for this purpose. The dewatering work, which began around 9 am, continued until around 5 pm.

Several areas, including the Forest Department office, the Cantonment Board, Central Street, Dreamland, Arfium, and Raj Mohalla, were affected. The water swept away several two-wheelers; traffic was disrupted. The road from Dreamland Square to DSOI Square was barricaded.

Damages Incurred

The affected areas include The Cantonment Board garden, SBI Bank, and Malwa Complex, which were also completely submerged. An area of about 500 meters was transformed into a pond. The banks in the area were also closed the entire day.

The 10-year-old pipeline system underwent a similar failure around 8 years ago in the Kishanganj area. On Thursday morning, a 7-foot-long plate welding joint in the pipe broke loose, causing the plate to dislodge and rupture the pipeline.
