Madhya Pradesh: Tazias Salute Krishna Temple On Muharram; Story Behind This 200-Year-Old Tradition

Kuldeep Saxena, Datia: The three-day Muharram festival concluded with the burial of the Tazias at Karbala in the Bhander region of Madhya Pradesh's Datia district on Friday. In a remarkable gesture, the tazias saluted in front of the Chaturbhuj Sarkar Temple while passing through Hazari Mohalla, a tradition believed to be around 250 years old. As per the locals, the tazias salute the temple every year, marking a great example of unity between the two communities in Bhander.

200-Year-Old Tradition

As per the popular beliefs, a Muslim man named Hazari had dreams of the presence of a four-armed idol of Lord Vishnu on the hills of the eastern region of the city. The idol was obtained from the Son Talaiya Kund, a large pond present on the hills, and was established inside the temple by Hazari himself. The tazias, since then, have been paying their respect to the temple, a tradition ongoing for centuries.

It is also believed that Shri Chaturbhujraj Sarkar, Lord Vishnu's idol, could not be lifted during the Dol Gyaras tradition without Hazari's efforts. His wife continued the tradition for several years after Hazari's death; however, the tradition was followed by other villagers after she turned old.

Villagers Remember Hazari

While Hazari died a few years after establishing the temple, the villagers have continued to cherish the unique and remarkable story of unity. The tazias celebrate and salute the temple every year while passing through the route every year. Apart from this, they also recall the stories of the incident and promise to continue and pass on the tradition.

The locals stated that nearly three dozen Tazias and four Buraqas are placed in Bhander every year during Muharram. While tazias are buried in Karbala on the 10th of Muharram, the Buraqas are brought back to the Imambaras. They further stated that they salute the Chaturbhuj Raj Sarkar Temple on the way to Hazari Mohalla.
