JE News Desk: A 36-year-old man wanted in 18 criminal cases died in police custody in Delhi’s Netaji Subhash Place Police Station in North West Delhi. The deceased, identified as, Sheikh Sahadat, was arrested on Saturday and was in police custody for one day in connection with an Arms Act case. He was arrested along with four others on Friday in connection with the case.

"The deceased, Sheikh Sahadat, from Jahangirpuri H-Block, was aged 36 years. He along with four other people were apprehended in a case under sections 25/35/54/59 of the Arms Act at Police Station Subhash Place on July 21,” the Delhi Police said in a statement.

The police also stated that Sahadat had more than 18 previous criminal involvements. The police further mentioned that other accused involved in the case were under judicial custody.

The medical examination of the deceased was conducted by the police at the BSA Hospital on Saturday evening. Following the examination, he was taken to the police station and was lodged in a lockup at night.

“The accused was rushed for medical examination to BSA Hospital immediately. He was admitted to the hospital where the doctors declared him brought dead,” DCP (Northwest) Jitendra Kumar Meena was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

The DCP further said that the police officials are conducting an inquiry into the cause of death and the staff will also be questioned.

In another incident which took place recently, a 33-year-old undertrial named Mohammad Ahmed Ali attempted suicide on Sunday morning. Ali slit his throat and the nerves of both his hands in Jharkhand’s Dumka Central Jail.

He was in critical condition and was later admitted to the jail ward of the Medical College Hospital.
