Mumbai | Jagran News Desk: At least three people were confirmed dead and several others feared trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai's Dongri area on Tuesday. 

According to BMC officials, at least 40-50 people are feared trapped in under the debris of the Kesarbai Building, which is located in Dongri's Tandel Street. The incident reportedly took place at around 11:30 am.

Fire brigade, Mumbai Police and civic officials rushed to the site to carry out the rescue operation. The NDRF tweeted that they have decided to send another team to the site to speed up rescue operations, taking the count of teams to three.

03:14 pm: A letter has been found which was earlier issued by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) dated 7 August 2017 on Kesarbhai building that collapsed in Dongri, today. The letter stated: Building is classified as 'C1', to be evacuated for demolition at the earliest. In event of any mishap this office won't be responsible.

03:05 pm: A senior Mhada official has confirmed that the building which collapsed was illegal and built on an open space next to a cess building.

02:51 pm: Housing minister Vikhe Patil arrives at the building collapse site.

02:50 pm: Eight persons have been admitted to JJ Hospital.

02:49 pm: Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Barve and DCP, Zone 1, Abhishek Trimukhe arrive at the site where a building collapsed in Dongri. 2 people have died & 6 people have been injured in the incident, so far.

02:21 pm: As per the initial information I have received, around 15 families are feared trapped in the collapse. The building is around 100 yrs old. The entire focus is on rescuing the people trapped. Investigation will be done: CM Devendra Fadnavis

02:10 pm: Rescue teams and locals have formed a human chain and are using bare hands to remove debris as the lanes are too narrow for heavy machines to reach the spot.

01:35 pm: Five people, including a 2-year-old child, have been rescued, confirmed BMC officials. 

01:31 pm: According to BMC sources, at least two persons have been killed in the building collapse incident.

12:55 pm: According to media reports, the building was nearly 100 years old and also in a dilapidated state. It was even declared unfit for residing.

12:50 pm: Noticeably, the area was flooded in the recent days after hevy rainfall in Mumbai. During the monsoon rains in the financial capital this year, a number of walls had also collapsed, raising questions about the state of infrastructure in the city.
