Mumbai Rains: Heavy Monsoon Showers Shut Schools, Mumbai-Pune Expressway; Orange Alert Issued For Thane, Palghar | Updates

Mumbai Rains: The monsoon is gaining strength across India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Mumbai. The adjacent Raigad district has been put on a red alert. Alerts have also been issued by the weather body for Kerala, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

Mumbai Rains: Flights Affected, Schools And Colleges Shut

The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rains in Mumbai, Palghar, and Thane. The weather body added that winds reaching 50-60 kmph will hit the city.

Amid instances of landslides, both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old highway were completely closed. Apart from this, all government and private schools and colleges have been declared closed on Monday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to Mumbaikars to leave their homes only if absolutely necessary.

Heavy overnight rains forced runway operations at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to be halted for an hour on Sunday. This affected numerous flights, with passengers experiencing an average delay of 75 minutes for departures and 28 minutes for arrivals. Four IndiGo flights were cancelled, while 13 flights were diverted to nearby airports and later brought back to Mumbai.

Several areas of the country's financial capital recorded 200 to 300 mm of rainfall over the past 24 hours. High waves were seen near Marine Drive and the Gateway of India. The heavy rainfall also caused waterlogging, traffic jams, and falling trees.

Mumbai Rains Claim Multiple Lives

A 63-year-old man, Yunus Kundawala, died when a tree fell on his shop in Kurla, Mumbai. An 18-year-old boy died when a tree fell on his bike in Goregaon East on Saturday afternoon. Earlier, a 55-year-old man, Aslam Issac Shaikh, died after falling into an open manhole in the Sakinaka area of Andheri East. A man was killed and two women were injured when a concrete slab fell from a second-floor balcony in Navi Mumbai.

Heavy waterlogging was reported in Chirner village in Navi Mumbai; locals claimed they killed 12 snakes on Saturday. In Bhiwandi city, a 17-year-old boy drowned in the swollen Kamwari River. The search for his body is ongoing.

Delhi Weather Update

Moderate rain also lashed parts of Delhi on Sunday, bringing much-needed relief from the humid weather. The weather department has issued an orange alert for the national capital on Monday.

Odisha Weather

According to the Meteorological Department, the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal in Odisha has intensified into a deep depression, prompting the state to put all its districts on high alert. The department said the system is likely to cross the northern Odisha coast in the next 24 hours and cause heavy rainfall across eastern India.

The department has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur and Kandhamal. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued for the remaining districts.

Bengal Weather

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until July 7. Heavy rainfall is also expected in neighboring Bengal.

Kerala Weather

Heavy rains lashed most parts of Kerala on Sunday. The weather department issued an orange alert for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 6 and for Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod on July 7. However, a yellow alert remained in effect for several northern districts.

Himachal Weather

Light to moderate rainfall continued in several districts of Himachal Pradesh. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the state over the next two days. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected in Uttar Pradesh over the next 24 hours.

Jharkhand Weather

The Meteorological Department in Jharkhand has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in all 24 districts from July 6 to 9. The department said that the sky will remain cloudy and light to moderate rain is expected across the state.

Heavy rainfall is also possible at isolated places. Heavy rainfall is expected in Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Hazaribagh, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Ranchi on Monday.
