CJP spokesperson Saurav Das has criticised the registration of a case against Ruchika Singh, who allegedly made derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar over the NEET paper leak.
Calling the use of criminal law against Singh “completely unacceptable”, Das said that offensive speech alone should not become the basis for criminal proceedings. In a post on social media platform X, he argued that the police should focus on serious criminal matters instead of targeting a 25-year-old protester.

“The misuse of criminal machinery against Ruchika Singh is unacceptable. Profanity does not attract a criminal case. 50 per cent of Lok Sabha MPs have criminal cases against them, close to 100 MPs in the BJP. The Police can focus their energy towards them, not a 25-year-old. Harassment of the young must STOP immediately,” Das said.

The controversy began after a video of Ruchika Singh allegedly using offensive language against Prime Minister Modi during the July 23 student protest at Jantar Mantar went viral on social media.
Following the video's circulation, a complaint was filed alleging that the remarks undermined the dignity of the Prime Minister’s constitutional office and could create social tension.
Delhi Police Begins Investigation
A zero FIR was registered on July 29 at the Expressway Police Station in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Noida, under Sections 352, 353(1), and 356(1) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Since the alleged incident took place under the jurisdiction of Delhi’s Sansad Marg Police Station, the case was transferred to the Delhi Police. Authorities are now investigating the matter based on the viral video and other available evidence.

While some have demanded action against Singh, others have argued that remarks made during political protests should be viewed in the context of dissent and free speech. The matter remains under investigation.
