3 Days, 3 Cities, 3,020 kg Waste: Inside Bittu Tabahi's Massive Yamuna Cleanup Drive Across NCR

After leading the cleanup of MP’s Ajnar River, Surendra Singh Chaudhary, popularly known as Bittu Tabahi, has turned his attention to cleaning Delhi’s Yamuna River. On World Cleanup Day (September 20), Bittu and his team of volunteers launched the campaign, collecting 585 kg of waste on their very first day.

The widely circulated videos showed volunteers collecting plastic, flowers, garlands and other waste left behind. It took around four and a half hours to clean the Delhi water body. Sharing a post on social media, Tabahi said, “20 September, World Cleanup Day. Four and a half hours of cleaning on the banks of the Yamuna, and together removed 585 kg of garbage.”

I’ve often applauded young people like Bittu Tabahi who simply decided they’d had enough of seeing our water bodies neglected, rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

During the drive, many locals joined the cleaning, helping to clear the garbage. “Flowers, garlands, worship items, and plastic were all scattered on the pier. The people around also came and helped, and the whole shore was cleared. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came,” the post added.

His videos gained attention, and Philip Morris supported his work. During the Delhi cleanliness drive, Morris assisted him to organise the campaign. His work has attracted attention from prominent figures too. Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared his river-cleaning efforts on X, giving the campaign another boost online.

With the Yamuna drive set to continue for two more days, Bittu’s latest campaign is now bringing his hands-on approach to one of the capital’s most prominent and polluted waterways.

Cleans Gurugram Too

On September 21, the campaign moved to Khedki Daula in Gurugram. This time, the amount of waste collected was significantly higher. According to Bittoo's post, the team removed 2,435 kg of waste with the participation of people who joined the cleanup. He thanked everyone who came forward to contribute to the effort before announcing the next stop, Noida.

Noida's Yuva Shakti Ghat being cleaned

For the third and final leg, Bittu reached Noida. Bittoo announced a cleanup drive at Yuva Shakti Ghat, Sector 94, from 6 AM onwards, and invited people to join the effort to clean the Yamuna riverfront.

The Noida drive completed the three-city route, taking the campaign from Delhi to Gurugram and finally Noida.

Who is Bittu?

Bittu Tabahi is a young BSc student from Biaora, Madhya Pradesh. His cleanup efforts around the Ajnar River brought him attention on social media, where he shared videos of the work. What started as an effort around one river has now expanded into a larger public cleanup initiative, with #CleanWithBittu bringing people together across different locations.
