Women's Safety Goes For A Toss: Delhi Sees Multiple Gang Rape, Murder And Harassment Cases In 10 Days

Delhi Rape And Harassment Cases: The national capital has reported a series of serious cases of sexual assault, gang rapes and harassment in the last 10 days. The cases include the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park, rape of a minor girl at a hotel in Wazirabad, a case of harassment of a young woman near Hakikat Park in the Mukherjee Nagar area and the gang rape of 16-year-old girl in Swaroop Nagar area. Police are investigating all these cases as calls for action grow louder amid questions on women safety.

Woman Harassed Near Hakikat Park

In the latest incident, a young woman was allegedly harassed near Hakikat Park in the Mukherjee Nagar police station area on Wednesday night. The incident took place at around 9.30 pm. According to Jagran.com report, citing police, two young women were walking on the road when they were allegedly subjected to indecent behaviour.

The woman later approached the police, and a case was registered at Mukherjee Nagar police station. Police said the complaint alleged that the accused were travelling in a car. During the investigation, police traced the owner of the car. During questioning, it emerged that Naman, son of Anil Kumar, was driving the car at the time of the incident. Two or three other people were also present in the vehicle.

The victim, identified as first-year Master's student from the Hindu College has also posted a video about the incident on Instagram. She stated that the men also tried to pull them inside the car when they briefly stopped. The accused fled the scene only when her friend took out the phone to record them.

Minor Raped At Wazirabad Hotel

In another case, a minor girl was allegedly raped at a hotel in north Delhi's Wazirabad area by a man who had befriended her through social media. The incident took place at a hotel in the Wazirabad police station area. According to police, the girl and the accused are residents of the Wazirabad and had become acquainted through social media.

Police said the accused took the minor to the hotel on the pretext of their friendship and raped her there. The girl returned home and told her family about the assault. Her family then approached the police. The girl was medically examined, and her statement was recorded.

Based on her statement and the medical examination, Wazirabad police has registered a case under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other sections. The accused is on the run.

Aastha Kunj Park Case

The above two case come amid ongoing investigation into the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Delhi's Aastha Kunj Park, which has now focused on digital and forensic evidence. According to police sources, the mobile phones of all three accused, Asif, Hemant and Mukesh have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Hemant and Mukesh allegedly deleted their search history after the incident. Investigators are examining their digital footprints as part of the probe while also looking into whether the incident was planned. The case had come to light on September 21, when three men approached the 17-year-old girl and her male friend while posing as police personnel. They reportedly used police-like language and threatened them with legal action. Investigators said the girl was subsequently sexually assaulted inside the park.

LSR Students Hold Protest

Earlier on Wednesday, students of Lady Shri Ram College for Women held a protest march on Women Safety after rape case near campus. Before that, regular classes were cancelled on Tuesday and shifted to online mode for Wednesday, with the college administration stating that the safety of its students remained its top priority.

Teen Gang Raped In Swaroop Nagar

Earlier on September 17, four teenagers were apprehended in connection with the gang-rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl in north Delhi's Swaroop Nagar. The victim, a school dropout who lived on her own and was searching for work to support her family, was found stabbed and hidden under leaves in an open field near Kushak Road on September 13.

According to police, the victim knew one of the suspects, a 17-year-old, and had gone to meet him on the evening of September 10. Under the influence of alcohol, the suspect raped her and called his friends after she threatened to report him. The group then gang-raped the girl before dragging her to a nearby field on September 11, where she was stabbed six to eight times. The accused then hid her body under leaves and mud before fleeing the scene.

The decomposed body was discovered later with visible skeletal parts and a missing right arm. The cops during the probe assumed that the genitals of the victim were chopped off.
