The Delhi Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against Congress leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi for forcefully entering Akashvani Bhawan during an INDIA Bloc protest march to the Election Commission of India (ECI) office. A case has been registered for breach of law and order and unauthorised entry.

The two leaders had entered the Akashvani office on Tuesday to reach Nirvachan Sadan, the ECI office, as the main road was heavily barricaded. Visuals from the site showed Rahul being resisted by the security guard before he pushed him aside and entered the premises.

The exit towards the ECI office was locked, prompting Rahul, Priyanka, and other leaders to stage a sit-in beneath a Banyan Tree within Akashvani Bhawan.

No official permission for protest or Akashvani entry

According to Delhi Police, leaders of the INDIA bloc had planned a protest march from Parliament House to Nirvachan Sadan (Election Commission headquarters) on Tuesday, but no official permission was sought or granted for the proposed demonstration and march.

When the protesters were stopped by barricades near the Election Commission office, several leaders and MPs sat on a sit-in on the road.

Police allege that after being stopped, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, along with other opposition MPs and security personnel, entered the premises of Akashvani Bhavan on Parliament Street without prior permission.

The sit-in inside the Akashvani Bhawan lasted for almost 9 hours, with high-voltage drama. Delhi Police later moved to clear the premises and detained Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi and KC Venugopal among others.
